Question

Functional gastrointestinal symptoms (FGS), of which irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent, represent a considerable burden on the global public health system, reflected in their high incidence, recurrence, and negative impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from them. In Honduras, recent studies indicate that approximately 15% of the population between 25 and 55 years of age has IBS, with women being the most affected group (El Mundo, 2024; La Prensa, 2022). These disorders manifest mainly with abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation, symptoms that, although functional, generate significant demand on the health system and affect productivity and social well-being. In this context, the study focused on the prevalence and factors associated with FGS in the population aged 12 to 49 in the communities assigned to the 6th rotation of the Public Health IV course, which is of utmost importance for primary health care in Honduras. Primary health care (PHC) is the fundamental pillar of the Honduran National Health Model, oriented toward the promotion, prevention, early detection, and comprehensive management of diseases at the community level, which allows for a timely and efficient response to problems of high frequency and social burden. Understanding the local prevalence and sociodemographic and environmental factors associated with GFS will allow PHC professionals to identify at-risk patients in a timely manner, improve diagnostic quality, and design appropriate preventive strategies aligned with national policies and the capabilities of community services. Furthermore, the study will contribute to strengthening the practical training of medical students, preparing future physicians capable of comprehensively addressing gastrointestinal health challenges in the community. Therefore, this research is presented as an essential tool for planning and managing public health in Honduras, which aims to reduce morbidity and improve the quality of life of the affected population, fulfilling the strategic objectives of the National Health Model focused on primary care. humanize text
